October is Michigan’s Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month
Our friend, Stephanie Jackson MCHE, BHSA, CLS, with Wayne County Department of Health, Human Services and Veterans Services, sent us these details concerning Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month and the importance of spreading the word about Safe Sleep. Check out the video she provided too!
One baby that passes away from sudden infant death syndrome is too many. Yet, an average of 144 infants die yearly due to preventable sleep-related causes (Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), 2022). Common places that unsafe sleep practices occur are infants positioned on a couch or chair, adult bed, and sharing a sleep surface. The most common area reported 69% were deaths due to an unsafe sleeping environment that included objects in the sleep space, such as blankets and pillows (MDHHS, 2022).
Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed October as Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month in Michigan and the goal is clear and imperative. We must increase awareness throughout our communities of the importance of knowing, understanding, and practicing the ABCs of Infant Safe Sleep, which are baby should sleep Alone, placed on the Back, and placed in a Crib, every nap and bedtime. Together, we can eliminate the risk of infants dying from SIDS and always remember that safe sleep matters.

Reaching Birthing People in Detroit: A Successful Event
Recently, Detroit witnessed its largest and most successful community baby shower. The M.O.M.S Tour Detroit collaborated with local maternal health programs to invite birthing people and providers of maternal health services throughout the city to attend this community baby shower. It was held August 12, 2023 at Detroit's Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God and Christ. Hundreds of birthing people and their partners came to enjoy an afternoon of fun, gifts, resources, and to gain connections for the health and wellbeing of their family. Opportunities designed to improve access to vital support services and ultimately healthy birth outcomes. While vendors celebrate the success of this event, there is the important question of what’s next. I ask all family support programs to keep in mind that parents want to be helped as well as heard.
Question? How can we engage these new parents as equals in the designing of equitable, valued family support programs? If you have a suggestion, please email Gaylotta at gaylotta@greatstartwayne.org.
