Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates Dr. King's life and achievements as an influential American civil rights leader. Many Detroit and Wayne County organizations offer events honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Check out the link below and take your children to learn and celebrate at one of these educational, fun events. Families with kids who turned 4 by December 1, 2023 can register through the end of January for full day preschool. Remember, income eligibility has expanded and MANY MORE FAMILIES will qualify! Last Month Great Start Collaborative Launched Clement Kerns Gardens Housing as an Official Talking is Teaching Site!
In partnership with The Community Builders we have: - Trained Families in the community as Trusted Messengers
- Continued participation in Community Events
- Provided families with Literacy Lawn Signs to spread awareness of early brain development
- Added early learning spaces for children 0-8 years old to the community laundry space and the leasing office in the community
Together we will spread the message that when you Talk, Read, and Sing with children from birth you are helping them build their brains!!

The Great Start Family Coalition (GSFC) had the pleasure of hosting two organizations with amazing groups of women and their children to participate in the Pajama Program. The Pajama Program emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy sleep routine for their little ones. The young ladies showed great interest and eagerness to learn, and providing them with valuable information was a joy. Seeing their happy faces was such a lovely experience for the GSFC.
